Everything about Hyderabad Airport Metro line

After a brief spell of scrapping the Hyderabad Airport Metro Line, the State government reinstated the plans with several changes. According to the latest announcements, the new alignment will cover a distance of over 70 km and will connect various parts of the city. Currently, the new line is in the planning stage. Read on for all the latest updates about the new Hyderabad Airport Metro Line.

Update: After scrapping the Hyderabad Airport Metro Express Line, which was initiated by the previous government, the Chief Minister has given the green light to the new Hyderabad Airport Metro Line. The plan development of the new and longer Hyderabad Airport Metro Line will be done as a part of Phase-2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project. The new route will cover more than 70 km and touch several corners of the city.

In January 2024, the Chief Minister of Telangana scrapped the Hyderabad Airport Metro Express Line, citing its impracticality as a prime reason.

The Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd. (HAML) started the soil testing process of the 31 km-long Hyderabad Airport Metro Express. The corporation already completed the ground survey and started with the peg marking of the alignment. The soil testing took about two months for the 100-meter pillar locations starting from Raidurg to Shamshabad Airport.

The old Hyderabad Airport Metro project was planned to run along the Gachibowli Main Road and the Outer Ring Road to reach the terminal of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad. The State government proposed the old project to be operational by the end of 2025 at an estimated cost of Rs 6,250 crore. It was supposed to be executed by the Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) on behalf of the Telangana government.

Hyderabad Airport Metro: Status

After discarding the previous Hyderabad Airport Express Metro Line, Telangana’s Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has given the go-ahead to start finding the feasibility of the new Airport Metro Line. The new line will be developed as part of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project Phase 2 and cover a 70-km distance. Currently, the line is in the proposal stage, where experts from Hyderabad Metro Rail Corporation are finalising the route map and other specifications before presenting the final proposal in front to the authority.

Developments before the project was scrapped

Before the project was scrapped, the HAML authority revealed that it had started the soil testing process for the Hyderabad Airport Metro Line since the ground survey had been completed. HAML has also begun the process of peg marking alignments to carry out the project’s preliminary works. This includes identifying the locations of the metro pillars and conducting soil tests.

In the previous plans, the last station of the Hyderabad Metro’s Blue line, which ends at Mindspace Junction, was also expected to be integrated on this stretch. The authority looked into the design options for the new integrated Raidurg Station at Mindspace Junction, and the new Airport Metro Station from the passenger’s point of view. In addition, HAML started incorporating retro-reflective boards in the road medians to create a visual link between the starting point and the destination. These boards were supposed to help identify the change of the station.

Hyderabad Airport Metro: Project details

The newly proposed airport metro corridor will be over 70 km long and connect Nagola and Chandrayangutta. Since the project is currently in the planning stage, the specifications of the stations are yet to be disclosed. However, the new Hyderabad Airport Metro Line is anticipated to pass through Nagole Chowrasta, Alkapuri Chowrasta, and Kamineni Hospital.

Currently, the officials are exploring options to make a detailed project report for approval.

Following are the details of the scrapped Hyderabad Airport Metro Express Line:

The previous Hyderabad Airport Metro was a prestigious project of the Telangana government that was planned to ease connectivity and accelerate realty growth in the burgeoning areas. Here are some key details of the scrapped project:

Funding:The estimated cost of the airport metro project was Rs 6,250 crore. Of this, the Telangana government allotted Rs 377.35 crore in the 2022-23 Budget.

Plan: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) prepared a detailed outline of the project. The airport metro line was supposed to be 31 km long, connecting Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport within 30 minutes. This new metro line was expected to consist of around 10 metro stations.

Timeline: The project was estimated to be completed in three years.

Expected ridership: 1.6 lakh by 2031, 3.03 lakh by 2041, and 4.03 lakh by 2051.

Hyderabad Metro: Map

As of now, the new line is in the planning stage and authorities are searching for feasible routes with maximum impact and connectivity of the newly planned line.

The previous 31 km-long Hyderabad Airport Express Metro was proposed to cover an area of 0.840 km at grade level, while the distance of around three km was supposed to be underground and the remaining to be elevated. The Hyderabad airport metro route was planned to have one underground station and nine elevated stations. The previously shared map by the State government highlighted that the airport corridor to pass through Raidurg, Bio-Diversity Junction, Nanakramguda, Narsingi, Manchirevula, TS Police Academy, Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, Airport Cargo and Airport Terminal.

Furthermore, the Hyderabad Metro Airport line was supposed to connect Raidurg Metro Station and RGI Airport. In between, there were three traffic corridors covering around 70 km.

Here is the Hyderabad Airport Metro route map

The Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao laid the foundation stone of the previously announced Hyderabad Airport Metro on December 9, 2022. The State government also submitted a detailed project report (DPR) for the expansion of the 31-km metro line from BHEL to Lakdikapaul.

However, on the critical stretch from Raidurg station to Nanakramguda junction, Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) engineers faced tremendous technical challenges. Considering the numerous flyovers, underpasses, and high-rise buildings along this stretch, the engineers were considering a variety of options for the metro line’s design. An engineering team said crossing Mindspace junction, which consists of an underpass, rotary and flyover at the height of 21 meters, can be extremely challenging. The team also examined whether smaller spans of pre-stressed concrete girders should be laid in situ or whether a 90-meter-long composite steel girder can be erected in situ.

Another engineering challenge was the multi-level flyover at Biodiversity Junction, crossing the airport metro viaduct at a height of 20 meters. In order to prevent any adverse effect on the foundations of the flyover pillars, airport metro pillars were planned to be staggered away from them.

Hyderabad Airport: Impact on real estate

The previously planned project for the Hyderabad Airport Metro Express Line was scrapped in the wake of limited impact and feasibility. However, the new Airport Metro Line in phase 2 is intended to cover more areas and connect the metro to the suburban parts of the city.

The Airport Metro project is also envisioned as an opportunity to encourage the development of city outskirts to provide affordable housing for lower-income groups and better accommodation for middle-class groups.
